Recently qualified languages teachers’ contributions to your taught programme

The seminar consists of 3 parts, this is part 3.

Go to: Part 1 ¦ Part 2 ¦ Part 3

Part 3: Next steps

Which parts of the programme are most relevant?

Given that part 2 of this e-module has particularly highlighted the importance to teachers in their training year of the ‘near-peer’s’ recent practical experience, training institutions might consider recent ex-trainees can offer contributions to the taught programme which may be perceived as more valuable than HEI tutor sessions in these key areas of the taught ITT programme for trainee teachers of Languages:

· Role and duties on trips abroad
· Monitoring and recording pupil progress
· Marking pupils’ work
· Going to the first languages post interview
· Managing behaviour challenges in the languages classroom
· Completing the induction year
· Career development opportunities and further training
· Recycling and re-using lessons and materials from the training year
· Promoting continued language study within the school
· Developing organisational skills and time management

How can my institution support the recent trainee’s contribution?

Remember to brief your recent languages trainee thoroughly, as it is unlikely he or she is accustomed by life and school to planning and preparing materials and activities for adult learners and extended learning sessions.

You may wish to advise your ex-trainee to study reading from Part 2: Links to educational theory of this e-module in order that he / she becomes more familiar with the learning theory, and may derive confidence in their role as ‘near-peer’ facilitator.

Remind him or her to include:
· an introduction of him/ herself
· elements of presentation involving talk & texts for trainees to read in or beyond the session
· opportunities for paired or small group discussions
· the chance to work as individuals or in groups with exemplar materials
· further reading references
· an evaluation exercise
